The Cadillac Escalade was first launched for the 1999 model year, and subsequently discontinued after 2000; continuing on in 2002. Changes and improvements through the years feature improved performance and added technology; as well as more seating capacity and cargo room.
First Generation (1999 – 2000)
The first-generation Escalade was sold only in the 1999-2000 model years, with just under 50,000 units produced in that time. It was designed from the start as a placeholder until the new GMT820 platform arrived in 2000. It delivered a 5.7-liter Vortec V-8 with 255 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque through a four-speed automatic transmission. The Escalade had the same underpinnings as those used in the Yukon Denali line, sharing the same engine, but boasting a cushier interior appearance than the Denali. It had leather seats and a Bose Surround system that added luxury.
Second Generation (2002-2006)
Skipping the 2001 model year, the second generation started in 2002 and Escalade was one of the most popular SUVs on the market. Power, luxury and style went way up; as well as its standard engine. A standard 6.0-liter Vortec V8 with 345 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque with the same four-speed automatic transmission was offered; along with an 8,000-pound tow rating. It’s previous 5-seat limitation, now came as standard with seating for eight. Upgrades to a four-wheel version of the StabiliTrak Electronic stability control system was added.
In 2003, the addition of HID low beam headlights, power-adjustable pedals, and a Bulgari clock were standard.
New standard features were added in 2004 including XM Satellite Radio, second row bucket seats, and a monitoring system. This model year also introduced the first Platinum Escalade ESV – a luxury trim which came with the added benefit of 20-inch chrome wheels, a lowered suspension, heating and cooling functionality on both the seats and the cup holders, and an ebony and shale dashboard, shale leather upholstery, and a chrome grille.
Third Generation (2007-2014)
Redesigned for 2007, the third generation Escalade goes big, including a 6.2-liter Vortec V8 that generated 403 horsepower and 417 lb-ft of torque with a six-speed automatic transmission. It is available with full-time AWD. Inside, leather, wood, and soft-touch plastics were everywhere; as were entertainment screens, premium sound systems, and heat-and-cooled everything.
In 2009, a Platinum package became available, and in 2010, side-impact airbags for the front seats were new.
A short-lived Escalade Hybrid was offered between the 2009 and 2013 model years. It put out 379 horsepower and fuel economy ratings of 20/23 mpg city/highway.
Fourth Generation (2015-2020)
A standard 6.2-liter V8 with 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission delivers this generation. It also features Cadillac CUE infotainment system; as well as its driver assistance package, including cruise control, cameras, and onboard diagnostics. Cargo capacity is a maximum of 94.2 cubic feet with second and third rows folded down and a maximum of 120.9 cubic feet with the long-wheelbase Escalade ESV. A hands-free power liftgate and power-folding third row are standard. It has a towing capacity of 8,300 when properly equipped.
In 2016, minor updates to the infotainment system were made; and standard smartphone integration via Android Auto and Apple CarPlay were added. Lane keep assist became available.
Teen Driver and rear-seat reminder became standard in 2017; and a rear-camera mirror and park assist were made available. In 2018, ten-speed automatic transmission replaced eight-speed automatic transmission.
Fifth Generation (Current)
This generation was launched for the 2021 model year. Mechanically, it’s all new, with an all-new independent rear suspension, allowing for the installation of a folding third row. Three suspension variants are available on the new Escalade: the standard non-adaptive setup, a mid-level version with magnetic ride control, and an adaptive air suspension with integrated magnetic ride control. You can choose from two powertrains: the 6.2-liter V8 with the same 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, and a 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel inline six-cylinder with 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. Both are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. A revised multimedia system was updated; along with an available 36-speaker AKG premium audio system. There is a curved OLED display that is made up of three screens, totaling 38.3 inches, and spans most of the dash. In front of the driver, a 14.2-inch display shows the gauges. To the right of that, a 16.9-incher controls the infotainment, the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto interfaces, and various vehicle settings. A 7.2-inch screen to the left of the gauge display offers trip info and the controls to pull up the available night-vision view or augmented-reality navigation in the middle screen.
The Cadillac Escalade has changed through the years and boasts an attractive cabin, sharp technology and plenty of passenger and cargo space for a comfortable ride.
